Boyd quits Scotland under Burley

Rangers striker Kris Boyd has told BBC Scotland he will not play for Scotland again under manager George Burley.

Boyd said he left a message with the Scotland boss on Saturday night after Burley told Radio Scotland the forward must prove himself with his club.

“I left a message on George Burley’s phone last night and he hasn’t got back to me,” said the 25-year-old Boyd.

“I will not be playing for George Burley again, but I hope to be back in a Scotland jersey again one day.”

Boyd spent the entire 90 minutes of Saturday’s match against Norway on the bench and contacted Burley after the 0-0 draw when he heard the Scotland manager’s comments on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound programme.

In his post-match interview with BBC Scotland’s Chick Young, Burley defended his decision to replace Birmingham City striker James McFadden with Wolves’ Chris Iwelumo during the match.

“Kris has got to establish himself in the Rangers team, which he hasn’t done,” said Burley.

“Chris (Iwelumo) came on because he’s been playing regularly and has scored eight goals in six games for Wolves.

“You’re always looking for players to prove themselves, and Boyd is not any different from anyone else in the squad.”

In a statement released in response to Boyd’s decision, Burley confirmed that the player had been in contact with him over the decision to step down, and expressed his disappointment that Boyd would not be available for Scotland’s remaining Group Nine World Cup qualifiers.

“I’ve spoken with Kris and he told me that he was disappointed not to play on Saturday or in the last couple of matches,” said Burley.

“He said that he did not want to be considered for future Scotland squads so that he can concentrate on his club career.

“It is disappointing that he has chosen to do this at a crucial time in our World Cup campaign, but it is his decision to make and I will, of course, respect it.”

Boyd also told BBC Scotland that he decided to contact the chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, Gordon Smith, to inform him of his decision to step down from international football under Burley after leaving the message for the Scotland manager.

Boyd added: “I didn’t think just leaving a message was very professional, so I spoke with Gordon Smith and informed him of my decision.”

Smith agreed that Boyd’s departure was his own decision, but admitted that the player is an important part of Scotland’s setup and perhaps the decision was made in anger.

“It’s very disappointing, you want to have all your players available and Kris Boyd has a good scoring record for Scotland,” said Smith.

“But it’s his decision and we must always respect a player when they make that decision.

“It’s a shame he’s not going to be available for us in the future, but it’s his decision and we have to go along with it.

“He didn’t play yesterday, he didn’t come on as a substitute, maybe he’s a bit upset.

“It might have been the kind of thing that if Kris had spent a bit of time thinking about it he might have changed his mind - it’s maybe a quick reaction to how he feels.

“He may change his mind, and hopefully he will, because he would be a very important player to have in our squad.”

Rangers midfielder Lee McCulloch also retired from international football last month, but the SFA insisted at the time that his decision was not fuelled by a rift between McCulloch and the national manager.

Scotland 0 Norway 0

Chris Iwelumo missed an open goal on his international debut as Scotland suffered a blow to their World Cup hopes with a draw against Norway.

The 30-year-old Wolves striker placed the ball wide from just three yards moments after coming off the bench with the goalkeeper stranded.

Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon had saved well from Bjorn Helge Riise and John Carew as Norway threatened.

And, despite more possession, the Scots did not do enough to deserve a win.

It leaves Scotland on top of Europe’s Group Nine qualifying group but with just four points from their first three games ahead of group favourites Netherlands playing Iceland in the evening.

Scotland manager George Burley had promised continuity following the 2-1 victory in Iceland and made only two enforced changes.

With veteran David Weir replacing the suspended Stephen McManus and James Morrison on the wing in place of the injured Kris Commons, it meant a flexible 4-5-1 system.

That could become 4-3-3 when Scotland were on the attack and that’s how it was in the early stages as Burley’s side took the game to their opponents.

Some neat passing gave Morrison a sight at goal, but the West Brom winger’s drive from the edge of the box failed to give an early test to Jon Knudsen, the Stabaek goalkeeper given his debut at the age of 33 in place of Rune Jarstein, who had shouldered the blame for Norway’s 2-2 draw with Iceland.

But their two-goal hero from that game, Steffen Iversen, had recovered from injury to spearhead an attack that was dangerous on the break.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker threaded the ball through for John Carew and only with the combined attentions of Gary Naysmith and Gary Caldwell did the Scots manage to bundle the ball wide of their own post.

The Scots were fortunate to survive after another break by Carew when the Aston Villa striker beat Caldwell for speed.

When Gordon beat away the powerful 18-yard drive, Bjorn Helge Riise should have done better than blast wildly over from the edge of the box.

Scotland upped the pressure but without seriously threatening Norway’s rookie goalkeeper and James McFadden became an increasingly isolated figure on his own up front.

McFadden did create Scotland’s best opening on the stroke of half-time, the Birmingham City man’s deep cross being headed over from a difficult angle by Morrison.

Scotland’s midfield was conspicuous by its absence and there was further danger after the break when Carew forced a couple of saves from Gordon and Kjetil Waehler headed into the side netting.

Burley heeded those warning signals and replaced Morrison and McFadden with Chris Iwelumo and Steven Fletcher.

Norway brought on the more offensive Daniel Braathen for Bjorn Helge Riise but were immediately on the defensive with Barry Robson forcing a save from Knudsen with a stinging volley from the edge of the box.

Scotland were now playing two up front and Iwelumo missed an absolute sitter when a low Naysmith cross found the striker unmarked three yards out - but he somehow side-footed the ball wide.

Shaun Maloney fired a drive just wide of the far post from 20 yards and had another effort deflected wide from 10 yards as Scotland piled on the pressure.

However, it was Norway who finished the stronger, Waehler striking the post with another back-post header, Gordon parrying a close-range effort from Iversen and Carew firing just over the crossbar.

SCOTLAND TO PLAY ARGENTINA AT HAMPDEN

The Scottish FA today confirmed that they have secured a deal to play Argentina at Hampden in a Tennent’s International Challenge match on Wednesday November 19th this year.

Following extensive negotiations between the two parties, the ticket prices have been set at the same level as the forthcoming World Cup Qualifying Match against Norway. This being a significant improvement on the prices that were suggested when the prospect of the match was first discussed earlier this year.

The prices are:- Adults £25, £30 and £35. Family £18/£10.

Details of how supporters will be able to purchase tickets will be made available in due course.

Scottish FA Chief Executive Gordon Smith said today:-
“I am delighted that we have managed to strike a deal to bring Argentina to Scotland. When we were speaking to the representatives, it was clear that the Argentinians wanted to play us and were just as excited as we were about a match at Hampden.

We are very pleased that we will be able to put on the game at a pricing structure that will appeal to fans. “We want Scotland fans to see the players pit themselves against the best in the world and there are few teams better than Argentina. This is going to be a great match and a fantastic occasion and I know that George and the team will put on a show that will do the country proud.”

National Coach George Burley said:-
“We cannot wait to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the world and look forward to our fans giving the Argentinians a great Scottish Hampden welcome when they come here in November.”
